Bengaluru International Airport receives IATA Platinum certification for the first 100% Bar Coded Boarding Passes (BCBP) compliant airport in India
Airport geared to simplify business by reducing costs and improving customer service
Bengaluru International Airport today became the first BCBP compliant airport in India to receive a platinum certification. A delegation from International Air Transport Association (IATA) presented the certificate to the management of the Bengaluru International Airport for being 100% BCBP compliant. This state of readiness is in line with the industry’s decision to have all IATA member airports 2D bar code compliant by the end of year 2010.
Implementation of this technology will reduce costs and improve customer service for both airlines and airports by introducing faster and easier check-in. This system offers the passenger more self-service options during their journey through the airport. This also translates into paper documents being converted into electronic messages both for passengers and air cargo, saving time and increasing accuracy.
(L –R) Sunil Chopra - Manager India, IATA, Eric Leopold - Project Manager, Bar Coded Boarding Pass Simplifying the Business, IATA, Marcel Hungerbuehler - CEO, BIAL, Hari Marar - COO, BIAL and Francis Rajan - Head- Information Communication Technology (ICT), BIAL
BCBP uses IATA industry standard 2D bar codes that can be accessed from anywhere in the world. This is convenient for the passenger and eliminates the need for archaic and expensive magnetic stripe boarding passes. The industry’s saving from this process implementation is estimated at USD 1.5 billion every year.
Commenting about the certification, Eric Leopold, Project Manager, Bar Coded Boarding Pass Simplifying the Business, IATA said, “We are delighted to recognize the efforts put in by the BIAL management to make the Bengaluru International Airport 2D Bar Code compliant. With this they have partnered with the world travel industry to simplify processes and reduce costs. This will now set a best practice example for other Indian airports and help IATA maintain the deadline of 2010 for achieving this standard.”
“This is a proud moment as it reflects the Bengaluru International Airport’s proactive approach to adopting technology in order to simplify airport processes. The use of 2D Bar Code will not only reduce costs but also revolutionize the way we travel. We will continue to pioneer best industry practices”, said Marcel Hungerbuehler, CEO, BIAL.

Bengaluru International Airport Traffic figures, new airlines and operational performance
Bangalore International Airport Limited today reported the review of traffic figures as well as an insight into the Winter season and Summer 2010 season forecast. Based on the air traffic figures, an upward trend has been reported since July this year. The passenger traffic in the last quarter was 2.45 million, the highest ever at the airport since its opening in May 2008.
In the latter half of the year, domestic carriers stabilized with higher traffic numbers which they did not achieve a year back. This is a positive sign which indicates the traffic growth at the airport. This growth is expected to continue hereafter. The continued growth would result in new markets being opened by airlines in the near future. With winter being one of air traffic’s peak seasons, the growth henceforth looks optimistic.
“In the last quarter Airport Service Quality (ASQ) which is a world graph of airport performance standards, the Bengaluru International Airport was rated as high as 4.17 on a scale of 1 – 5, comparing it to the best airports in the world. More importantly, the online as well as physical feedback received from passengers has been positive as well as encouraging”, said Marcel Hungerbuehler, CEO, BIAL.

LOOKING AHEAD
The future at the Bengaluru International Airport looks positive with new airlines, new frequencies and increased traffic numbers. The airport is looking at the addition of four new routes (three international and one domestic) every year.
The airport is also looking at the addition of two new international carriers every year. The focus will be on connecting Bangalore to China, Africa and US.
The increased focus across airlines is to tweak frequencies in line with yields and projected demand to create a sustainable operation. Increased aircraft capacities and hence new passenger demand for BIAL in the near – to – midterm will primarily come from airlines based in Asia and Middle East.
SUNSHINE ON THE HORIZON IN 2010
Leading the pack are Air China with the Shanghai – Chengdu – Bangalore route and Qatar Airways that has expressed intent to begin operations from Bangalore in Summer 2010. It has plans to deploy an A321 daily, arriving from Doha. Air Asia from Kuala Lumpur is also scheduled to being operations in April 2010. Bengaluru International Airport celebrates Children’s Day
The airport was filled with bright and warm smiles this morning. The reason was the presence of 41 children who came from the Morning Star (NGO) for a special Children’s Day celebration. Read on as the following images take you through all the fun the kids enjoyed along with some of the CSR volunteers and terminal staff who put their official roles aside and had some serious fun.
The images below take you through the kids’ day out at the airport
About Morning Star Children's Home – Started by John Samson 18 years ago, the home for abandoned kids grew from one child to over 70 today. Situated near the Bengaluru International Airport, the home is open to any child regardless of caste or creed - any starving child on the street is welcome. 20 of the home’s children are differently abled and immobile, but the rest lead normal lives and attend schools nearby. BIAL has been closely associated by Morning Star for over a year now. Donations to the home are made regularly by the airport’s CSR volunteers who visit the home periodically to spend time with the children and brighten up their lives.
Bengaluru International Airport Sees off Hajj Pilgrims on their Holy Journey Special arrangements made to ensure a comfortable and hassle free transit
This year the holy pilgrimage for the Hajj pilgrims from Karnataka is easier and more comfortable than ever before. Special arrangements have been made at the Bengaluru International Airport, to suit the needs and requirements of the pilgrims before they embark on their holy journey. The first departure on Saturday, November 7 was smoothly executed.
Due to the seamless coordination between the Hajj committee and Bengaluru International Airport, the check-in and immigration process is already done in the city. This results in very short waiting time and a relaxed start of the journey. Over 900 passengers have departed till date. In the next two months, over 6000 pilgrims would have transited through the airport.
The 32000 square feet, well ventilated, carpeted structure is equipped to easily handle 600 passengers at any given time. It is fully equipped with immigration counters, check in counters and security scanners. With direct access to the airside, passengers have to walk no more than 70 meters to their waiting aircraft. Eight BIAL operations personnel, including a terminal manager have been designated to assist and ensure smooth operations.

This year too, support from the city’s NGOs has been encouraging. Through their displays, products and interactions, they will subtly spread the importance of the 4 R’s -Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Re-grow, all in a fun carnival atmosphere.”

From products in jute and cotton to paper, bamboo, organic and natural fiber and Kalamkari art, there will be something for everyone. Prices will start at Rs. 20.
To actively help spread the green message; BIAL will wholeheartedly support this initiative while not deriving any monetary gain from it.
BIAL’s larger green canvas
Bengaluru International Airport being a greenfield airport, not only has the advantage of effectively planning its infrastructure for a long term, but, it also proactively adopts equipment and practices for a greener today and tomorrow.
Water conservation: At Bengaluru International Airport, 1200 KL of rainwater is harvested at every rain. 350 recharge wells ensure that water at the airport is conserved and the water table is maintained as no bore wells exist on the 4000 acre plot. Over and above this, BIAL regenerates 65% of its water consumption which is used for landscaping, air conditioning and construction.
Energy conservation & efficiency: Concerted efforts have gone into choosing brand new infrastructure that is energy efficient and employing skilled manpower capable of tapping the highest levels of energy saving. Efficient temperature controllers for air conditioning, optical sensors in the baggage handling system and automated speed reducing controllers in the escalators when not in use are just some of the examples of the airport’s energy conservation measures.
Minimal energy for lighting: BIAL saves over 19, 13, 400 units of electricity per year by using natural light and intelligent lighting systems in the terminal building. Apart from this, Bengaluru International Airport adopts the latest lighting technology in the airport premises and on the airfield, ensuring the highest levels of effective energy management in every scope of the airport.
Capable leadership and careful monitoring: Expert engineers under the capable leadership of a certified energy auditor and manager along with regular awareness camps and energy audits make this airport an environmentally responsible organization that causes minimal effects on the environment while constantly replenishing and restoring natural balance.

State of the art infrastructure and sustained marketing efforts resulted in attracting seven new international connections to Bangalore in ten months
Bangalore International Airport Limited’s efforts of developing and maintaining positive and productive relationships with airlines are reflected in it winning the Routes Asia Airport Marketing award on March 30, 2009. Five airports competed for this award in the Indian sub-continent. In these times of an economic slowdown, it is considered a major achievement for an airport to keep its route network and traffic base stable, let alone secure new routes.
This award is best judged by the airports’ primary customers - the airline network planning community. The airlines within Asia nominated five airports whose marketing efforts during 2009 made a real impact on their future network development plans. The airlines considered the efficient and useful marketing activities of the airport on their network, by geographical region, irrespective of airport size.
The award was based on how creatively an airport has made the most of its available resources and the winners were chosen on the basis of which airports tried their best to develop airline relationships, keep existing routes and secure new ones. In the last ten months, Bengaluru International Airport has been able to successfully attract seven new airlines including Dragon Air, Tiger Airways, Air Mauritius, Oman Air, Saudi Arabian Airlines and the new Bangalore – London connection by Kingfisher Airlines.
Important criteria like initiatives taken to improve the airport’s infrastructure, the terminal and runway were taken into consideration. Key initiatives that airports have undertaken to attract new airlines, launch new routes and continue to develop relationships with existing airline partners were also taken into account. The results were measured in terms of the new routes launched and growth in traffic numbers. A key incentive for airlines to fly a completely new route to Bangalore is the rebates that the Bengaluru International Airport offers them. The airport also helps airline network planners with studying and identifying the market segments available.
Ashutosh Chandra, Head-Airline Marketing & Aviation Contracts, BIAL receives the award from Gerard Brown, Group Sales Director, Routes Development Group, UK
The main focus of Bengaluru International Airport is to provide passengers a world class traveling experience at the airport and we hope that the airport emerges as a regional hub for South India. The airport has come a long way in these ten months of operations and today it can proudly say that it has reached a high level of efficiency. BIAL pioneered the concept of the Airport Operations Control Center (AOCC) in India. Operational Airport Management, a concept that is new to Indian airports, ensures smooth and efficient airport operations. Today, over 80% of flights depart on time and average wait time for delivery of the first baggage on the arrival belt is just seven minutes for both domestic and international arrivals, which by international standards is a good record.
Continuously enhancing the airport’s infrastructure, recent developments include the country’s first of its kind Cargo Village to strengthen Bangalore’s position as a trade and commercial hub and the 33 km underground pipeline commissioned by the airport’s fuel farm concessionaire IndianOil Skytanking Limited (IOSL).
MoCA approves UDF of Rs. 260/- for domestic outbound passengers
In response to the domestic User Development Fee (UDF) application filed by the Bangalore International Airport Limited, the Ministry of Civil Aviation today announced that effective January 16, 2008; all domestic outbound passengers from the Bengaluru International Airport will be charged a UDF of Rs. 260 (inclusive of taxes).
All domestic departing passengers will pay the UDF starting January 16, 2009 irrespective of the date of booking or purchase of ticket. The UDF receipt can be obtained at the counters located before the departure hall of the terminal building.
UDF is classified as an aeronautical revenue source, used for the development, management, maintenance and operation of the airport and is charged only to embarking passengers. World over UDF (sometimes simply called "passenger fee" or "airport tax") is charged to passengers and it has not been a deterrent as the passenger understands that it is an essential source of revenue for the sustenance of the airport. Gradually in India too, this concept of the user paying for the infrastructure he uses will gain ground and acceptance. Just like the way a passenger pays toll to access a highway that is in turn utilized towards the upkeep and maintenance of the said highway, similarly, UDF is charged.
"The decision to charge UDF has come more than seven months after we began commercial operations. UDF is a crucial revenue stream for us and although we have not been allowed to charge the amount we requested for, this is a beginning. The presently approved UDF is an ad-hoc UDF. The final UDF will be decided by the Ministry of Civil Aviation after further reviews or by the regulatory body, who will be appointed by Government of India soon." said Albert Brunner, CEO, Bangalore International Airport Limited.
BIAL has invested Rs.2273 crore in the design and construction of Bangalore's first greenfield international airport. The contractual agreements specify the collection of domestic UDF from Airport Opening Day whereas up until now only international passengers were levied a UDF of Rs. 1070/-.

Indian airport infrastructure can be modernized up to international standards if adequate funds are available. Such funds can either come from Governments, the airlines or - in the case of Public Private Partnerships (PPP) - from passenger fees. Therefore, it has always been a fundamental element of the airport privatization in India that the new greenfield projects will be funded through a UDF. The same will be monitored by an Independent Regulatory Authority (IRA) to ensure that airports do not generate excessive profits.
The UDF is levied on embarking domestic and international passengers for the provision of passenger amenities, services and facilities. The UDF will be used for the development, management, maintenance and operation of the airport.
BIAL offers assistance for a seamless 2009 Aero India show Changes to airport operations and schedule during the show
The 7th Aero India 2009, recognized globally as a premier aerospace exhibition is soon to be held in Bangalore this year. Recognizing the need for airspace requirement for showcasing the latest in the field of Military and Civil aircraft, vital components for aircraft engines, avionics systems, airfield radars and new age technologies used in the defense sector, Bengaluru International Airport has offered its support towards the success of Aero India 2009.
Marcel Hungerbuehler, Chief operating Officer of Bengaluru International Airport said, “The Aero India show exemplifies the new opportunities made available in the civil aviation sector and the need for creating a knowledge pool to share expertise in the research and development of aircraft. We are happy to support the 2009 Aero India show and will make necessary operational provisions to ensure the success of the show.”
For the period during the event practice and rehearsals held from February 7-10, 2009, Bengaluru International Airport will halt commercial operations from10:00 hrs to 12:00 hrs. Similarly, during the actual event scheduled between February 11-15, 2009, the airport will refrain commercial operation of aircraft between the Aero show timings beginning 10:00hrs to 12:00hrs and 14:30hrs to 16:30hrs. This is in lieu of the airspace requirement of the show to be held at the adjacent Air Force Station, Yelahanka, Bangalore for air display.
As a result, scheduled aircraft operations out of Bengaluru International Airport will be impacted and the airlines have received communication on the reduced operating hours.
Passenger convenience will be ensured with the respective airlines sharing timely communication on the change in airport operations and the cancelled/revised flight timings during the length of the 2009 Aero India show. Ancillary support by airport taxi and bus service providers will be aligned to accommodate the increase in anticipated traffic towards on main airport road (NH7) resulting in increased commute times for passengers flying out of Bengaluru International Airport.
BIAL is proud to be associated with this prestigious event and all changes to airport operations will be made available on the website www.bengaluruairport.com for passenger reference.
Cargo Village Inaugurated at the Bengaluru International Airport
Continuing to enhance the airport’s infrastructure, Bengaluru International Airport inaugurated the country’s first of its kind Cargo Village. Spread over 11 acres of land area with adequate provision for future expansion, the facility, located near the cargo terminals is expected to strengthen Bangalore’s position as a trade and commercial hub while ensuring faster clearances of import and export consignments from the cargo terminals at the airport. The facility, completed over a period of 10 months, has been built with an investment of Rs. 12 crore.
The Cargo Village will house 120 freight forwarders and 80 custom house agents. It will be ready for occupation from Jan 1, 2009, post the execution of the agreements with Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) and will be managed by the cargo associations. It will also accommodate parking of nearly 80 trucks.
‘‘Cargo development is a key focus of BIAL’s core business strategy. With the inauguration of the Cargo village we will be able to further enhance existing cargo operations for Bangalore. Our airport has witnessed both a quantitative increase in terms of export facility area and qualitative improvement in terms of storage and handling capabilities to promote the outflow of goods. The facility will generate employment opportunities and create a better working environment for its occupants,” said Albert Brunner, CEO, BIAL.
The Cargo Village was inaugurated by members of the executive management of BIAL and executive office members of ACAAI (Air Cargo Agents Association of India) and BCHAAL (Bangalore Custom House Agents Association Limited).

Bengaluru International Airport’s current facilities include two operational cargo terminals - built and operated by Menzies Aviation Bobba Pvt Ltd and Air India SATS Joint Venture consortium. The former has an initial capacity to handle 150,000 metric tons of cargo, while the latter has a two floor warehouse with a capacity of 200,000 metric tons. Till date, the airport has handled 70,905 tons of cargo. Together, they have the capacity to handle twice Bangalore’s current annual cargo requirement which stands at 170,000 tons. Essential facilities at the warehouse such as banks, conference rooms, training rooms, business centre, help desk, staff canteen, truck parking, etc. make it a truly advanced facility.
Over 740 freighter flights (international and domestic) have operated from Bengaluru International Airport since it began commercial operations on May 24 this year. Of these, two new freighters - Expo air and Jett8 Cargo were introduced after the airport became functional. Today, the airport operated freighters to ten destinations across India and overseas.

Change in the Management of BIAL - Albert Brunner leaves BIAL after 7 years in charge
After more than seven challenging years in his current position, the Chief Executive Officer of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), Albert Brunner, has decided to move on and not extend his contract with BIAL. The Private Promoters have nominated Marcel Hungerbüehler, the current Chief Operations Officer of BIAL, as the new CEO of BIAL as of February 1, 2009.
Albert Brunner was appointed as CEO of BIAL in 2002. Since then he has led the realization of the Bengaluru International Airport project. Construction of the new airport began in July 2005 and the airport opened for commercial operations on May 24, 2008. Airport operations have since been running smoothly and widely appreciated by its users and the international airport community.
During his tenure, Albert Brunner was instrumental in initiating several firsts in the history of Indian airport infrastructure management. He has pioneered the public private partnerships development of airports in India at a time when neither the unprecedented growth in air traffic nor the widespread privatisation process in India could be fully anticipated. Albert Brunner was instrumental in negotiating and signing the concession agreement between the Government of India and BIAL and all other project agreements, which led the path for the future privatization process.
“I have greatly appreciated the various excellent interactions with business leaders, politicians, officials, the highly competent and motivated staff of BIAL and personal friends over all these years and my decision to leave BIAL is purely personally motivated. After seven years in this position, the time for a change has come. I initially came here on a three year contract but ended up making Bangalore my home for seven years.” said Albert Brunner.
Marcel Hungerbühler has been the Chief Operations Officer of BIAL over the last two years and was instrumental in the start-up process and the operations of the airport. He brings with him 38 years of experience from the aviation industry and has held various high level management positions with Swissair and Swissport prior to joining BIAL.

Bengaluru International Airport excels in operational efficiency Facilitates four million passengers, 50500 aircraft movements
Bengaluru International Airport announced the completion of six months of successful airport operations. The new greenfield airport opened in May this year.
Gaining credence as Bangalore’s pride, this fully functional airport reflects operational excellence with 80% of the aircrafts departing on time i.e. with 15 mins tolerance, as per the internationally accepted norms. Average wait time for delivery of the first baggage on the arrival belt being 9 minutes for domestic and 13 minutes for international arrivals. Average queue time at check-in is 10 minutes, at security check it is 7 minutes, at arrival immigration it is 15 minutes and at departure immigration it is just 7 minutes. Internationally, these figures are considered excellent.
Advanced degree of operational effectiveness is seen at the airport today as a result of continuous improvement to airport facilities and importance to timely and systematic resolution of passenger issues.
Albert Brunner, CEO of BIAL shared data, facts and figures with the media. He said, “The passenger today is evolved with his travel to other international airports. The performance at an airport is measured in terms of the time taken for each process and his quick entry and exit from the airport. We are glad to have established the success of this six month young airport with data supporting its operational efficiency.”
Airport Infrastructure Since May 2008, the airport has had significant announcements which are industry firsts. It is now the first airport in India to be connected by an offsite Air Turbine Fuel (ATF) pipeline meeting international quality standards. A 33 km underground pipeline has been commissioned by the airport’s fuel farm concessionaire IndianOil Skytanking Limited (IOSL). The pipeline, running from Devanagonthi to the airport fuel farm, has a capacity to pump over 156,000 liters of ATF per hour. The second unique operation by IOSL is the single man refueling on the apron.
Another first is E-Konfer - a web based emergency alert and group communication system developed exclusively for Bengaluru International Airport. It acts as the backbone for all secondary communication at the airport. Inbuilt with technologically advanced features such as group audio and text message broadcasting and conferencing, E-Konfer provides the vital tools that the duty staff at the airport requires to alert the teams of the developing situation without loss of time.
In July 2008, Bengaluru International Airport became the first airport in the country to get connected via helicopter shuttle service. This announcement came just one month after it opened.
Bengaluru International Airport Traffic The airport began operations with 170 flights per day in May this year, it ended the summer ‘08 season with 162 flights per day. For the winter ’08, flights increased to 165 per day resulting in a growth of 1.5%. Although the domestic air traffic reflects a decline of 1.5%, this overall positive growth is due to the increased international flight operations from Bangalore further establishing the many promises that the city holds. Compared to the summer season, we will see a 23% growth in international movements.
The last six months have seen the introduction of six new international air carriers into Bangalore, making more global destinations directly accessible to air travelers. These include Dragon Air, Tiger Airways, Oman Air, Air Mauritius and most recently Indian carriers - Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways. This increase is largely due to the city’s attractive air traffic passenger profile and the increased capacity of the new airport.
The total increase in international flights during the winter schedule is over 160% as compared to last year’s winter schedule. New flights and sectors from our Bengaluru International Airport also includes Indian Airlines to Abu Dhabi which commenced operations from Oct 27, 08. Additionally, Transmile (freighter ) will begin operations to Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur – Subang).
New additions at the terminal Bengaluru International Airport recently opened its Reserved Lounge that caters to high profile and important travelers such as MLAs, MPs, Chief Secretaries, visiting dignitaries and high profile executives. The lounge also houses an office for the State Intelligence and is operational 24/7. The other lounges in the terminal building include the Oberoi, Kingfisher and BIAL operated lounge – Café Net at the domestic departures. In addition, the VVIP terminal on the airside also has a lounge. The airport is readying to add the Indian (IC) lounge, soon to open, to its list of lounges, built on par with international standards.
The seating capacity for travelers and visitors to the airport is now over 1762. Over and above other improvements, the number of restrooms at the airport has increased by 70% at the airport.
Future vision – Quote by Albert Brunner When the airport opened in May this year, we were confident of handing the traffic for the next 2-3 years. I would like to reiterate the same again. Yes, the industry slowdown has given us some more time to plan and research but an expansion is evident. This project will continue to be built in phases up till the final master plan is realized. We are conducting a study on the current trend and based on the results, which will be out in two-three months, we will take a decision on our next expansion.
Bangalore airport today symbolizes state of the art infrastructure, efficient airport operations, and competitive price structures, high service quality with the overall performance appreciated by both airlines and passengers alike. We thank our passengers for the encouraging feedback and valuable suggestions. It gives us fervor for the long journey that lies ahead.
Since June 2008, there has been a significant fall in monthly traffic for all airports in India. Current projection for the year 2008 -09 is 9.2 million passengers.
Employees at the airport The total number of employees at BIAL now stands at approximately 700, of these 55% are locals from the city. They are valuable to the organization as they bring in local culture and expertise. For the same reason, BIAL has always encouraged its concessionaires to employ locals as well. Of the 4000 concessionaire and partner employees, approximately 75% are locals.
Bengaluru International Airport completes 100 days of commercial operations
Gaining fast credence as Bangalore’s own Airport from the aviation community including travelers and airlines, Bengaluru International Airport completed 100 days of commercial operations today. The Airport has so far seen 2.42 million passengers, 29446 air craft movements, and the handling of 44357 Metric tones of cargo besides seeing an encouraging 30% increase in international airlines and air freight carriers into the city.
The growth, though declining owing to the overall upheaval of the aviation sector in the last several months, has been encouraging.
Passengers say “aye” to Bengaluru International Airport
Citing the first hundred days as a whirlwind journey, Albert Brunner, CEO, BIAL said that the customer feedback has proven to be the Company’s biggest trump card. Referring to a customer survey conducted by the Airport in July, Albert Brunner said, “Whereas we had several teething problems in the first few weeks, the situation has improved very fast. The passengers have indicated a high level of satisfaction with the new airport. They have specially been appreciative of the check-in procedures, courtesy of airport staff and the overall ambience of the airport”.
Transportation services to and from Bengaluru International Airport have silenced the worst critic and have won accolades. The convenient BMTC services have seen an increase of 10 air conditioned buses now totaling to 50 since the start of the Airport in May and three additional routes from the city to the airport; while BIAL’s concessionaires Meru and Easy Cabs have added 810 cars now totaling to 900 to their fleet.
In addition, Bangalore became the first ever city in India to witness the launch of helicopter services by Deccan Aviation and Global Vectra Helicorp Limited, for the convenience of the corporate traveler.
Passengers have appreciated the efficiency of the arrival and departure processes at the new Airport. Initial days saw hiccups in the area of ground handling – including baggage handling, and turnaround time of ground staff on the airside. However, these issues have been addressed as priority, with the maximum average wait time for passengers for domestic baggage claim being pegged at 16 minutes and 29 minutes for International arrivals.
The seating capacity of the Airport in the departure area is over 1400 seats, not including seating in the lounge area, F&B spots and other sections of the airport. The coming months will see the launch of the Kingfisher Lounge which will further add to the comfort of the frequent flyer, taking the number of lounges at the Airport to two. Over and above other improvements the number of restrooms has increased by 70% at the airport.
“We are yet to see passenger traffic hit the peak hour capacity at our Airport,” said Albert Brunner. Peak hour at the Airport constitutes 30% of the total operational hours currently, leaving plenty of scope to rationalize flight schedules and even out peak hours through the day, thereby eliminating capacity constraints at the Airport. “Besides, the use of new technologies i.e. Inline baggage screening, flexible use of check-in counters etc. by airlines and the adequate positioning of security and airline staff will speed up the arrival and departure processes significantly, thereby enabling quicker and more efficient flow of traffic that aids capacity management.”
Introduction of new routes
The last three months have seen the introduction of four new international air carriers into Bangalore making new destinations directly accessible to air travelers. These include Dragon Air, Tiger Airways, Oman Air and Air Mauritius, taking the number of international carriers from Bangalore to fourteen – the highest in South India.
On the domestic front, two new direct routes to destinations including Visakhapatnam and Baroda have been introduced enhancing convenience of travelers.
Cargo operations in full swing
The Airport is equipped with two separate cargo terminal facilities build and operated by Menzies Aviation Bobba Pvt Ltd and Air India SATS Joint Venture Consortium. The former has an initial capacity to handle 150,000 metric tons of cargo, while the latter has a two floor warehouse with a capacity of 200,000- metric tons. This capacity is twice Bangalore’s current annual cargo requirement.
Over 360 freighter flights (international and domestic) have operated from Bengaluru International Airport since it began commercial operations on May 24. Of these, two new freighters flights, Expo air and Jett8 Cargo have been introduced since the Airport was functional.
Airport employee strength
Bengaluru International Airport today employs close to 5000 people proving to be one of the fastest growing employers in the City. “It is known to all that Airports are significant employment generators leading to economic development of cities across the globe,” said Albert Brunner. Of this number, BIAL has a little over 600 employees while its concessionaires have recruited close to 4500 employees to their rolls. 52% of the people employed by the Airport are Kannadigas, demonstrating the significant contribution of BIAL in the area of employment generation.
Plans to expand
The airport is expected to commence the second phase by third quarter of 2009 (around July). This will include the second terminal and the second runway. This will take approximately 3 – 4 years to complete.“We are confident of meeting capacity requirements for the next eighteen months” said Brunner. However, there is an intention to build an ‘Express Terminal’ to accommodate any capacity constraints post the eighteen month period. The Express Terminal will be built in 15 to 18 months and hence the nomenclature. He added “These are ideas which will be concretized shortly.”
Exciting retail avenues
Bengaluru International Airport has emerged as a retail haven, enhancing the Airport experience considerably. It has seen a huge acceptance in the area of perfumes and fragrances, toys and books.
Bengaluru International Airport, in this short span has been home to innovative advertising campaigns – hitherto unseen in any Indian airport. The gigantic Louis Vuitton suitcase that was propped outside the Terminal Building has caught many an eye. Mercedes Mclaren MP4 23 race car was on display the whole of June 08 as a part of promotional campaign at the Tax and Duty free outlet (operated by Nuance Group India) at the Bengaluru International Airport marking the beginning of an exciting F1 promotion, in June. The car was on display by Johnnie Walker as part of their promotional campaign and was seen at the airport for three weeks.
Currently, a brand new replica of the Airbus 340 is placed outside the Terminal Building as a means of reminding people of Kingfisher’s foray into international territories.
BIAL – a committed and conscious employer
Recently, commemorating Independence Day, the airport wore a patriotic look as it geared up to get the employees and passengers to pledge independence from litter and a promise to keep the environment clean and green. Over 8000 pledges were received during the period of five, leading to the same number of saplings being planted in the Airport premises via the ‘The Green Pledge’ campaign. Symbolic of 61 years of Indian Independence, 610 trees were planted in the city at two locations i.e. The Prakruthi Township in babusapalya and at the Anugraha Ashram (School for Street Children) in Jaladamarada doddi.
Not to be left behind in the Olympic fever, Bengaluru International Airport witnessed four Olympic athletes departing from the airport drawing much fanfare and ado.
In Bengaluru International Airport’s constant endeavor to ensure safety and security for passengers and employees at the airport- both on the landside and on the airside, the month of August 2008 was observed as the ‘Driving Discipline Month’ with a view to improving driving discipline and driving standards on the Apron of the airport.
Focus of these sessions were on driving-skill certification, certification & license endorsement, speed control & control of towed objects, lane discipline, parking on the Apron and talking on mobile phones and radios while driving. Adherences to these rules were encouraged by giving complying drivers attractive incentives.
Amidst all these responsible activities, Bengaluru International Airport also found time to bring in the fun element at workplace. ‘Fun Olympics 2008’ was held in August with over 100 teams participating across airport staff coming from Concessionaires, Stakeholders, Airlines, CISF, Ground handlers and other vendors. Over 3000 employees were present to cheer the participants.

It is indeed a remarkable achievement for Bengaluru International Airport to have proved its operational efficiency in just 100 days. Congratulations!
Akin to the aircrafts taking off from its runway, the spirit at the BengaluruInternationalAirport is also soaring with patriotic fervour. Commemorating Independence Day, the airport is all geared up to get the employees of the airport and the passengers to pledge Independence from litter and a promise to keep the environment clean and green. For every pledge received, BIAL (Bangalore International Airport Limited) will plant a tree. ‘The Green Pledge’ campaign will run for one week beginning today.
Commenting on the campaign, Albert Brunner CEO of BIAL said “We are urging all passengers who visit BIAL to sign a pledge that they will keep it clean. And for every signature we get, we’ll plant a tree. The significance of every tree is that it triggers off a healing chain reaction that improves the health of our planet.”
Additionally, symbolic of 61 years of Indian Independence, 610 trees will be planted by BIAL in the city at two locations i.e. The Prakruthi Township in babusapalya and at the Anugraha Ashram (School for Street Children) in Jaladamarada doddi.
The essence of the campaign is making the city and the airport greener while sensitizing the public to keep our environment litter and pollution free. By carrying forward the philosophy behind BengaluruInternationalAirport’s identity that reflects the flowers and trees of our Garden City, BIAL will now actively engage the public in this noble cause. This is just the start of a sustained activity which will continue long into the coming months.
One the first day, enthusiastic and excited passengers were seen pledging their support to this cause and some of them even made time to plant a sapling at the airport.
The campaign is generating a lot of enthusiasm among many embarking as well as disembarking passengers. People are seen gathering near the signboards to pledge their commitment to a cleaner and greener city.

In the last seven days 45 freighter flights
operated from the new airport and 2800 tons of cargo was processed. The cargo is
handled by Air India SATS Joint Venture Consortium; and Menzies Aviation Bobba
(Bangalore) Pvt. Limited.
Over the last 24 hours (computed as of 12:00 noon
today), no delays have been reported due to the failure of any airport
infrastructure. The new airport is ensuring that an aircraft takes off within
the stipulated time after it lands.
New
airlines operating from Bengaluru International Airport
On June 01, Tiger Air (passenger) will begin
operations from the new airport. This will be followed by Oman Air that will
begin operations on June 16 and Jett8 (cargo); Dragon Air (subsidiary of Cathay
Pacific) will begin operations on July 01 and Sichuan Airline in mid July. These
airlines will fly to Singapore, Hong Kong, Muscat and China.
These
international carriers beginning operations from Bangalore reiterates the fact
that with this new airport, South India’s connections to the rest of the world
will improve substantially in the near future. Bangalore will now attract more
domestic and international airlines. This will benefit the state as it will lead

The startup team of Bangalore International Airport Limited has reported that the first eighteen hours of Day One operations at the Bengaluru International Airport have been satisfactory in comparison to other such transitions around the world. Bengaluru International Airport was marked operational at 00:01 hours with the take of Air India Flight IC 957 to Singapore early this morning. By the end of the day, the new airport will have handled 341 air traffic movements including 172 arrivals and 159 departures.
Concerns on the much debated distance to the airport were cast away by many passengers, who gave positive testimonials following their arrival at the Airport. The on ground transport offered by BMTC was an instant hit with passengers as several people were seen using and appreciating the service. "Besides initial teething problems, the take off was smooth. We will iron these out within a week of operations," reported BIAL, in a press statement here today.
Contrary to rumors that the ATC was shut down for an hour in the morning, BIAL clarified that this was not true.

We have received communication from the Ministry of Civil Aviation seeking a consideration of a suitable airport opening date after May 10, 2008 due to delays on the Air Traffic Control (ATC) services. BIAL has decided the new date of Airport Opening as May 11, 2008. We are clearly disappointed with this delay especially as our employees and all our partners have been working tirelessly to launch Bengaluru International Airport on schedule on March 30, 2008. This delay is beyond the control of BIAL. To mark the successful readiness of the airport infrastructure, BIAL will hold an event to showcase the new airport on March 28th 2008.

The flight trials conducted today at the Bengaluru International Airport in a near live environment heralded its operational readiness. Kingfisher Airlines, Air Deccan and the Indian Air force, whose aircrafts landed and took off at the Bengaluru International Airport, participated in the trials to ensure a smooth airport opening.
The trial started with the first landing of the Kingfisher airline from Mumbai at 10:00 am with guests and media personnel onboard. At 10:20 am Deccan airline arrived from HAL airport with guests and media personnel from Bangalore. The Kingfisher airline tested the international arrival process and entered into the terminal building through the boarding bridge. The Deccan airline used the remote parking bay and tested the domestic arrival process.
Close to 400 people participated in this historic trial run at the new Bengaluru International Airport. The facilities, procedures, systems and trained staff were also tested. The timing of the final flight trials is ahead of March 30, 2008, when Bengaluru International Airport will commence commercial operations. Performance is being measured carefully and corrective action will be taken accordingly. Trials will continue well into the month.
“This is an overwhelming moment for all of us. We have effectively demonstrated our readiness to handle a real life airport situation for both domestic and international flights. We are now confident that we will present Bangalore with a first class airport that will make its citizens proud.” said Albert Brunner, CEO, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL).
Trials at the new airport began in January 2008 and consist of four main groups-basic trials, advanced trials, integrated trials and fall-back with emergency trials. The flight trials conducted today are a very important part of these trial phases, with the airport being in an operational mode. This is an excellent opportunity to monitor the airport’s operational readiness.
